Good and Bad Assignment
Good Design
Design features:
Text: Summarize the qualities of the use of type that make a website successful.
Text is easy to read (not to big not to small), background does not distract from the text, and the flow of the text is clear concise are things that make a website successful. Break in text with the use of things such as pictures, quotes, and bullets to keep the visitor’s attention are very successful.
Navigation: Summarize the qualities of the navigation that make a website successful.
Navigation buttons/bars that are clear and easy to find is good. Visitors should not have to hunt around looking for ways to get around the site. For sites that are large, maps/index should be made available for fast access.
Links: Summarize the qualities of the links, and their behavior that make a website successful.
All links are underlined to let users know they are links. The color should change for those links that has already been visited to avoid users from viewing the same link again.
Graphics: Summarize the use of Graphics, vector and raster, that make a website successful.
A good rule of thumb is to have every graphic to have an alt label and matching text link. Images with appropriate hues and saturation are always a plus.
General Design: Summarize the aspects of the overall design that make a website successful.
Site should fit into a 800x600 space. There is a common element that ties the site together and all the pages load quickly. Color selection is great and work well with the company.
Notes:
Pay close attention to detail. How texts and images layout with each other can make or break the deal.
Bad Design
Design features:
Text: Summarize the qualities of the use of type that make a website unsuccessful.
Overall, text that are unsuccessful are those that make it hard for the reader to read through. This include text that are too small in size, crowded against the left edge, or stretched across the page. Bad texts are things such as having paragraphs that are all bolded, caps, italicized, or a combination of all three. Also, underlining any text that is not a link is considered to be bad text. Un-scannable texts, as in text that are boring and painful to read through (ex: no bullet points, short sentences, or break), will only turn visitors away.
Navigation: Summarize the qualities of the navigation that make a website unsuccessful.
Confusing navigation or those that are too complex are very unsuccessful at leading users through the site. No option for visitors to click back to where they came from. Orphan pages and useless pages that tell nothing about the page are things that should be avoided.
Links: Summarize the qualities of the links, and their behavior that make a website unsuccessful.
Text links that are not shown as link so people don’t know they exist, links that lead to unrelated pages, and dead links are some features of bad design. Links that does not change color once it is visited is another bad choice.
Graphics: Summarize the use of Graphics, vector and raster, that make a website unsuccessful.
Graphic that doesn’t fit the page, takes a long time to load, and/or is meaningless/useless are bad design choice.
General Design: Summarize the aspects of the overall design that make a website unsuccessful.
Pages that are cluttered, meaningless, serve no focal point, and lacks a sense of design aesthetic are aspects that make websites unsuccessful. No sense of uniformity, bad color selection, lack of flow, are other things to avoid.
Notes:
Do not over cluster a site! Simple at times can be the answer!
URL of a Poorly Designed Site: http://interiordesign614.com/category/home-make-overs/
Design features:
Text: Summarize the qualities of the use of type that make this site unsuccessful.
Some pages are so wordy and extremely uninteresting to scan through. On the main page, the text at the bottom portion of the site was difficult to read with the orange text against the blue background. Some of the title of the categories are unrelated to the context and just seems out of place (ex: “Gotta Have It” is not really necessary or it shouldn’t be in its own category since it is not really important). Some text placement are appropriate; however, some pages have too many words placed everywhere (it just makes it look clustered).
Navigation: Summarize the qualities of the navigation that make this site unsuccessful.
When I first entered the site, there was so many things going on at once that I got confused on where to go (and even where to look at first). Many of the main categories have a drop box of many other subcategories (some could have been combined to cut down the need for so many subcategories). Also, there was no navigation that leading back to the main page. The only way to get there is to keep on clicking the back button or re-enter the site, this can be frustration if a visitor is lost.
Links: Summarize the qualities of the links, and their behavior that make this site unsuccessful.
Links took forever to load. I found quite a few that had nothing to do with the design firm (ex: tips on green design). All of these extra sites just takes the audience’s focus off the interior design company and direct it somewhere else useless.
Graphics: Summarize the use of Graphics, both vector and raster, which make this site unsuccessful.
There’s not a lot of images, but when there are, they are either too small, irrelevant, or the images didn’t flatter the design firm at all. The hue and saturation of some images are ok, but some could use some help. When the graphic isn’t professional looking, it really takes away from the site.
General Design: Summarize the aspects of the overall design that make this site unsuccessful.
Contrast in the site is not interesting at all, bland and boring from the color to the overall layout. There’s no balance, rhythm, or any sense of unity, everything I clicked on was like a road block (nothing really caught my attention).
Describe the purpose of this site in the notes. (Include whether it was easy to determine the purpose – why or why not?)
Notes:
The purpose of the site is hard to determine, there is like a whole bunch of things going on. They provide services for residential interior design; however, their site serves more like a resource page for visitors who are interested in learning more about different aspects of interior design.
URL of site #1: http://www.rococogreen.com/profile.html
Design features:
Text: Summarize the qualities of the use of type that make this site successful.
The text is easy to read and the size is just right. The spacing is good, and the background does not distract from the text. The alignment and placement of the text is very appropriate and doesn’t take away from the content.
Navigation: Summarize the qualities of the navigation that make this site successful.
The site is extremely easy to navigate. Everything is broken into category permanently located on the top navigation bar. I can easily go from one category to another without getting lost. When there are subcategories, they are nicely lined up on the left hand side. Overall, the navigation aspect of this site has a definite desirable flow/rhythm to it that keeps the visitors wanting to move through it.
Links: Summarize the qualities of the links, and their behavior that make this site successful.
Links are easily determined. They load quickly and are related to the site.
Graphics: Summarize the use of Graphics, vector and raster, which make this site successful.
The graphic is clear, and the size is appropriate for the site. They are not overwhelming and everything seems to have their own orderly place. The professional looking images also have great hue and saturation, which really helps with selling the design.
General Design: Summarize the aspects of the overall design that make this site successful.
The contrast in color is great and the overall design is unique and interesting. I like the background, which is the company’s logo repeatedly used in a pattern in a muted gray. There is a common theme that is carried out in everything page, making the site look and feel very cohesive/unified.
Describe the purpose of this site in the notes. (Include whether it was easy to determine the purpose – why or why not?)
Notes:
The purpose of the site is very clear and easy to determine. The owner of the site provides residential interior design services. The site also sells some lighting, furniture, and upholstery. This site is nicely executed and I would definitely want to hire this designer.
URL of site #2: http://www.staceyrileyinteriors.com/contact.html
Design features:
Text: Summarize the qualities of the use of type that make this site successful.
The text placement and alignment are appropriately laid out and very easy to follow and read through. Bullet points, short paragraphs, and breaks between text (ex: with images or quotes) are some variety that were used that kept the text from being overwhelming.
Navigation: Summarize the qualities of the navigation that make this site successful.
Very easy to read through with the main categories located on the right (which is accessible at all time). There are at times subcategories under the main categories, but they are nicely laid out so that visitors can go right to where they want to go.
Links: Summarize the qualities of the links, and their behavior that make this site successful.
Links are easily defined by being bolded and changes color when the mouse points at it. Links load fast and they are relevant to the website.
Graphics: Summarize the use of Graphics, vector and raster, which make this site successful.
Very professional graphic with appropriate hue and saturation. Nothing is overly dominant and there is a sense of hierarchy. Overall, the graphic is beautiful and fit nicely on the screen.
General Design: Summarize the aspects of the overall design that make this site successful.
The color scheme is girly, but it still gives off a professional feel. Elements of the site have a great balance and rhythm to it and keep the visitor’s wanting to explore the site more (nothing clashes with each other).
Describe the purpose of this site in the notes. (Include whether it was easy to determine the purpose – why or why not?)
Notes:
Visitors to the site can tell right off the bat that this is an interior designer’s website. The text and images give off this impression right away. Visitors can easily access the “services” category to view a more specific run down of the interior design services that is available.
